Our Holiday Bucket List of Fun Family Traditions

When it comes to the holiday season, I am obsessed with creating and continuing on little traditions with my people. Something about having something to look forward to that leaves that memory with them means so much to me. That being said, the holiday season is a crazy one, so prioritizing your traditions and activities is key!! We like to sit down in November and plan out our Holiday Bucket List. This bucket list is full of our favorite traditions and activities, so we get them all in. We make sure each of our people get to add at least one item to the list, so it’s fun for everyone. So today I thought it would be fun to highlight a few of our favorite traditions and share a FREE Holiday Bucket List you can download + use for your own family!

: MATCHING PAJAMAS

This is our longest-running family tradition and I love it, so I wanted to tell you the story behind it. When we first started this tradition, it was just Joe, Hunter, and I. I wanted to start something to help me feel a little less home-sick. I’m sure you’ve all heard of the very common Christmas tradition of getting pajamas on Christmas Eve. I love pajamas and thought it was the sweetest tradition.

While I loved the idea behind the tradition, I didn’t love the timing. I am a sucker for the cute very Christmasy MATCHING pajamas. So, you can see my problem with the timing. I wanted to be able to sport our cute pajamas all season long! So, we had the idea to open our pajamas on Thanksgiving night instead! It has become one of our very favorite traditions for over 16 years now! Linking some fun Christmas Pajamas here.

Kailee Wright Kirkland Cookies

: DECORATING COOKIES

Year after year, this is one thing that ALWAYS makes our list! We love being in the kitchen together, and the holidays make it even more exciting. The little people love decorating sugar cookies (or any kind of cookie), and if I’m being honest…my whole kitchen. But seeing how proud they are of their creations makes it so worth it! These snowball cookies our are absolute favorite.

Fun Family Traditions Kailee Wright Montage Deer Valley

: PLAYING IN THE SNOW

I’m not going to lie, this one is not my favorite on the list because I don’t like being cold. But the little people LOVE it! Whether it is something simple like building a snowman or sledding or more extreme like ski lessons, snow always finds its way on our list!

: CHRISTMAS BOOKS

My kids love snuggling up together and reading Christmas books before bed! I set all the books in a basket in our front room by the fireplace so the kids can look through them. It’s such a fun way to get in the Christmas spirit and make memories with your people! I’ll link our favorites here.

. . .

Sharing a fun bucket list below that you can download and print for free! It’s a fun activity for the family to keep on the fridge and mark off activities together!

: CHRISTMAS WISHLIST

Did you miss the free wishlist I made? Each year, I give each kid about 5 gifts for Christmas…. something they want, something they need, something they can read, something they can wear, and something they can do! It makes it simple for me and is a great way to make sure you’re hitting all their needs and not just spending money on random stuff! Here’s my free Christmas printable wishlist below… just hold down the image and save it right to your photos! Our Travel Guide: Oahu

my swimsuit + hat + sunglasses

We had such a great family vacation in Oahu celebrating Hunter’s 18th birthday! The past few months have been so busy, so I’m so glad we could just soak up our time as a family for 10 days! We did a few beach days, did a fun/muddy hike, SKYDIVED, stayed up late, watched movies, and had family dinner every night! Joe and I were able to go on a few dates while Hunter watched the kids! It was such a memorable trip and I’m so grateful for my people!

We’ve been to Oahu multiple times, so I wanted to do a recap of our trip while also creating an Oahu travel guide that you guys can refer back to! I blogged about our travel favorites a little while back and of course our favorites made the trip with us. Our friends also gave us a ton of other great recommendations, so I’ll be sharing those as well.

OAHU TRAVEL GUIDE

turtle bay resort

: WHERE WE STAYED ON OAHU

We stayed at Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore. This is the only place we’ve ever stayed in Oahu and it’s our absolute favorite! The hotel just got redone and it’s so beautiful. That’s where Joe and I usually stay when we go by ourselves, but when we go with family we stay in the Villas! We love staying at Turtle Bay because it’s out of the city and more secluded.

Every time we get to Oahu, we pick up our rental car and head to Costco first thing! It’s on the way to the North Shore which is nice. We stock up on snacks, breakfast items, lunch items, and anything we might need for the week. That way we aren’t eating out for every meal. So that would honestly be one of my top tips when staying near the North Shore, especially at Turtle Bay.

shark cage diving with Haleiwa Shark Tours

: FOOD

Lei Lei’s at Turtle Bay is so good for dinner. Everything we’ve tried on the menu is delicious! Lei Lei’s is great for kids because the food comes out quick and then they can play on the grass.

Kula Shaved ice is on the North Shore next to Turtle Bay. It’s 100% organic and they make their own fresh fruit syrups!

Bonzai Bowl has amazing acai bowls! It’s connected to a gas station on the North Shore.

Seven Brothers has the best burgers ever! We ate there probably 6 times. It’s the whole family’s favorite burger place. They have two locations, one is a food truck and the other has an indoor/outdoor seating. They have a little shop attached to it and they have the best cookies!

Chollos is the best Mexican food we’ve found there!

Waialua Bakery has the yummiest sandwhiches and cookies! Everything is made fresh!

Leonard’s Bakery is one of our favorites. We get the hot malasadas and they are a must have!!

Island Vintage Shave Ice is in Honolulu and you HAVE TO GO. I can’t even explain how good it is! They use fresh fruit puree and have the best shaved ice you’ll ever find.

Food trucks are everywhere around the North Shore area. These are everyone’s favorites because they are so easy, especially with kids. There are lots of good shrimp trucks if you like seafood. We ate at a pizza one and the kids loved it!

ziplining with Climb Works at Keana Farms

: BEACHES

There are beaches EVERYWHERE on the North Shore! It’s such a beautiful area, so honestly anywhere on the North Shore would be good. I’ll share our favorites below.

Waimea Bay is a fun beach! The kids can’t totally get in because the waves are so rough, but it’s fun for them to body surf. This is the beach that has the huge rock, so the kids are able to cliff jump!

Pipeline Beach is always fun because there is usually always a surfing competition going on, so it’s really fun to watch!

Malaekahana Beach Campground is towards Laie. It’s a fun beach with smaller waves if you want to boogie board or try surfing! My kids REALLY liked this one.

laie temple was beautiful

: HIKES

Pillbox Hike is the muddy hike we did as a family last week! If you look it up you’ll be able to find it. It starts by Sunset Elementary.

Lanikai Pillbox Hike has beautiful views and is easy enough for kids! It’s in Kailua.

Haleiwa also has a pillbox hike that you can see tons at.

-There are actually a ton of hikes on the Turtle Bay property. Banian Tree and Pooch Hill are fun hikes to walk or run.

paddle boarding in Haleiwa

: ACTIVITIES

Waimea Falls is fun. You walk through botanical gardens and end at a waterfall that you can swim in! They provide life jackets. I’ve done it a few times.

Skydive Hawaii is who we used for skydiving! It was the most amazing experience ever!!!! I wasn’t scared at all and I’m somebody who never had the desire to skydive. I loved it and so did Hunter and Joe! They were fabulous to work with!

-My kids FAVORITE activity is the ziplining with Climb Works at Keana Farms on the North Shore.

Honolulu has the best shaved ice so that’s the main reason we go into town. They also have good shopping and nationwide food chains.

Haleiwa Shark Tours takes you out to swim with sharks in a cage! Go early though because the waves get bad.

-We did surf lessons with North Shore Surf Girls and the kids loved it! They had a photographer too which was nice.

-The Laie LDS Temple grounds are just so beautiful! We loved walking around and the kids enjoyed going inside the visitors center.

-The Polynesian Cultural Center is fun, but I think that one time was enough for us. There is a LOT to do there. If you go, plan for about 5-6 hours.

-We rented paddle boards in Haleiwa and paddle boarded along Anahulu River. We saw SO many turtles! There’s a rope you can swing from a tree into the river on your way back. You can bridge jump there too. My kids had a blast paddle-boarding!

Kawela Bay was an awesome bay to swim in. It’s very private and has really warm water!

Paradise Cove is such a fun option for snorkeling! Turtles will swim right up to you. We almost always see monk seals too! The parking there is terrible, but it’s worth the wait. It’s right next to Aulani for reference.

-Turtle Bay has horseback riding along the beach! We’ve never done it, but have heard it’s really fun.

-The Dole Plantation is a one-time thing, for us at least. It’s fun to see how pineapples grow! And make sure you get a delicious dole whip!

Our Home: Gym

Today on the blog I’m sharing all the details of our home gym!! Having this space has totally helped me be better about reaching my fitness goals and setting aside time each day to get my workout in! It’s a fun space for the kids too. Sharing all the details below!

gym flooring + treadmill [code: KAILEE]

OUR HOME GYM

squat rack + bench + trx system

: OUR GYM

We use one of the smaller garages for our home gym! The only thing we got to design was the garage door. We had them do a glass garage door versus a full hidden garage. It has been the best thing!! I love having the natural light in there and being able to look at the view. It’s seriously so good for my sanity. I don’t like to be in a dark dungeon when I’m working out!

(Our mirrors were installed by the company who did all the glass and mirrors in our home!)

similar dumbell set

: GYM FLOOR

We bought this flooring from Lowe’s and it is amazing!! The flooring squares are 24 x 24 inches, so it takes up good space. It holds up really well, and you’re able to trim it with a knife to fit your room measurements! Highly recommend.

tv + dresser + ball + balance ball

: OUR TREADMILL

Every time I show our gym, I get tons of questions about our treadmill! It is worth every penny, and I’m so glad we bought it. Code KAILEE gets you $1,200 off!!!

wall rack + yoga mats + workout bands

Life Update

I figured it was time for a new life update!! Life has been crazy and I can’t believe it’s almost November!! I’m a summer girl, but last week was still in the 90’s here in St. George and I just want to be done sweating! It’s starting to cool down this week so I’m excited to wear some fall clothes! You can see some of my favorite fall fashion items here.

our outfits

: KID’S UPDATE

Hunter had her senior night last week too! I can’t believe it was her last region football game. I’ve loved watching her cheer at the games! The football team has their fist okay of game this weekend. So we will see how far they make it. It just hasn’t hit me yet because this is her first year cheering and it’s going by too fast! Hunter turns 18 in a few weeks and I know that means she’ll be and adult, but honestly she’s still my baby! It’s wild.

Hudson had his last football game last week and it’s bittersweet. He totally blossomed this season. He did so good, but he’s relieved that he can focus solely on baseball now! It was a lot for him to do 2 sports, but he loved it. I can’t wait to watch him play baseball!

Hayden has had a slow few months, but her cheer comp season starts mid November and we will be traveling a ton!! We’ll travel to Salt Lake a few times and we’ll be in Vegas literally just a few days before Christmas! Then we also have Phoenix and Dallas on the calendar for her cheer too. She is so excited. I’m just trying to enjoy October and November before comp season starts!

Houston’s finally using his finger! He broke it a few weeks ago playing kickball at recess. Everyone has been so sweet to ask me about him. He has his last finger appointment tomorrow and I think he will be good to play basketball and flag football! So he’s excited to get back into sports.

Harper got braces!!! She’s been telling everyone that she looks like she’s 10 now. And she really does, it’s wild. Every life update I talk about how fast my kids are growing up. It’s just crazy to me.

so happy with how our family pictures turned out | @maleaellett

: HAWAII TRIP

We’re going to Hawaii next week, since we didn’t do a trip over the summer. We’ll be there for Hunter’s 18th birthday and she’s honestly not super thrilled, but I know she’ll be happy once we actually get there. We’re so ready for a vacation. We didn’t get one this past summer because Joe’s work schedule was crazy. So we booked a 10-day trip and I can hardly wait! I’ll be sure to share all the details when we get back from our trip.

: HOUSE UPDATE

We’ve been doing more and more house projects and it’s starting to feel like home!! We’ve done a few limewash walls, you can see the results here. But our most recent project was our wood wall downstairs in the basement! I shared a reel of the process so check that out here! We ordered the wood panels from @woody_walls and I’m obsessed! We ordered the white ash solid wood and I love the look of it!! They also gave me a discount code- code KAILEE8! The process was so easy and I love the look it added to our basement. Seriously, anybody can do this!

I started sharing all the details of each room in my house, so if you haven’t seen those I will link them here! I’m still working on sharing more.

Hunter bought this body paint to show her school spirit to wear at games and when she cheers. It comes in tons of colors and is under $10!

Teen Takeover: Hunter’s Schedule

Hi guys! It’s Hunter here with another teen takeover! Today I’m sharing all about my crazy busy schedule and my mom is sharing her thoughts too!

Kailee Wright Teen Takeover: Hunter's Schedule

: MY SCHEDULE

My days switch off every other day but every single day is so busy. I get home every night between 5:00 and 7:00. I’m also on the Bomb Squad for her school which means I go to all the activities and get the student section hyped! So I also have meetings for that on top of everything else. Life is busy but I’m thriving off it!

6:00am-7:45am: cheer practice (I have this every day)

9:00am-1:00pm: 2 high school classes

1:30pm-5:00pm: hair school

6:00am-7:45am: cheer practice

8:00am-5:00pm: hair school

5:15pm-7:15pm: all-star cheer (I have this twice a week)

: MY THOUGHTS ON MY SCHEDULE

Like I said, life is insane right now but I am loving it. I wouldn’t want it any other way honestly. With all the things I have to keep track of, I started using a planner this year and it’s been my saving grace! I am constantly checking my calendar and my planner, writing down every activity, practice, and test. My planner goes everywhere with me.

Another thing I have done that’s helped me feel prepared is make sure I have everything packed the night before. There are some days I can’t go home between school and practices, so I have to pack the correct clothes and snacks. It’s been a game changer and allows me to sleep in an extra few minutes!

Saturday’s are really hard for me because I’m used to running around all week, so it’s hard to just sit home with nowhere to go. I try to catch up on family time and do chores around the house, but it’s like I forgot what it means to relax! Haha.

: KAILEE’S THOUGHTS

Mama Kailee here! I wanted to share some of my thoughts as well. So here’s a little backstory. Her junior year, we could hardly get Hunter to go to school. She still got straight A’s but hardly attended. So, before the school year started, Joe and I told her she would need to get a full-time job, go to school full-time, or do hair school while taking a few classes. She’s really ahead of school, so she only has 2 classes this year that are required. We wanted to give her some choices because we didn’t want her to just sleep in every day and hang out. That’s when she decided to do hair school and she’s loving it! The high school does help pay for some of it and they’ve been so helpful with her schedule, so that’s been amazing.

She doesn’t have a job at the moment. We offer her jobs around the house so she can make some money, but she doesn’t always take them. We take her to lunch once a week so we get that one-on-one time with her and we pay her for that. We both look forward to that each week. It’s a tradition we started when she started her sophomore year!

Honestly, I’m really worried that she will get burnt out. But she’s the type who doesn’t want to miss out on anything! She goes to bed a lot later than she should because she wants to be at every game, etc. I feel like teenagers are already so go-go and like to stay up late anyway. She was going to do soccer, and I don’t know how in the world we were going to figure that out! But she was practicing with the team earlier this year and eventually decided that chapter had ended for her. It was a hard decision for her. But she’s loved finding new hobbies. She started her own Instagram and loves doing that when she gets home. She loves sharing on there and linking items she loves. I’ll link some of her favorites here!

I’m just so proud of her. She’s handled everything so maturely, while still being the best older sister. Just trying to soak up all my time with her before she graduates!!
