Okay let’s talk meal prep!! Over the last probably 9 months or so, I’ve really been putting a lot of effort and focus on taking care of myself, so I can in turn be a better mom and wife to my people. I’ve gotten on a regular workout schedule I am loving, and have been putting a lot more thought on what I put into my body by doing meal prep. While like everyone, the physical results are always appreciated, what it has done for me mentally has honestly changed my life. I am happier, more patient, focused, and just feel like I can take on anything.
Learning the beginnings of meal prep has a lot to do with being able to take on these changes while being a busy mom to 5 at the same time. So today I wanted to share with you 4 quick tips to meal prepping for those of you who are new to it, or just considering it!
:: CONSIDER YOUR SEASON OF LIFE
With Instagram being so huge in our lives right now, it is SO SO easy to sit back and compare. You can look through your friends accounts and pick apart alllll the things they are doing that you are not. Healthy choices and meal prep is often one of those things. You may look at your newlywed friend that has her whole week planned out, labeled, and ready to go and think if she can do it why can’t I?
But then I want you to to think, are we in the same season of life? Does her day to do look like mine? Nobody out there is going to have the same life and responsibilities as you, so do what works for YOU and YOUR season. Trying to over do it and take on more than you can handle is going to stress you out more than help you out. Start simple with just doing meal prep for part of your day.
For me personally, I don’t like it to take away time from my family. Making family dinner together is one of our favorite things and I didn’t want to give that up. I wanted to be enjoying that time with them making those memories. So for me that means my main focus is on meal prepping our snacks and treats. It only takes a few hours, and the kids love to help, so we are still getting that quality time while it teaches them to make healthy choices.
:: PLAN AHEAD
It is called Meal PREP for a reason. You are preparing yourself to take on the day or week. So of course one of the biggest tips is to sit down at the beginning of your week and plan out what you want to prep. By doing this, you can tackle all the groceries you need in one trip, because you know what you are going to eat. If I have it all written out and planned, I am less likely to back out and settle for a different unhealthy option because I don’t know what to make.
We personally LOVE to use Clean Simple Eats. If you know me, you know I am PICKY. I always thought, how do I do healthy, when I despise lettuce?! Healthy food is salads and vegetables right? Wrong!! I wish I could fill this whole post with pictures from the Clean Simple Eats books to show you how amazing they are. Pizza, Tacos, MILKSHAKES, Burgers, they have it all. It is FULL of options for all your meals AND snacks AND treats. And I promise you, one look at the pictures and your mouth will be watering.
Our favorite is the treats book! My kids love to look through and pick a picture that looks the yummiest and make it together. I love that we can still have that time in the kitchen together, but in a healthy way. If you want to try it, you can use code KAILEE for $15 off.
:: SNACKS CAN MAKE OR BREAK YOU
Let’s rewind to before I started this healthy journey. Like a lot of moms out there, I was spending a lot of time at home, by myself, with the babies. When you are busy taking care of tiny humans, you tend to put yourself on the back burner. My go to “meal” was chocolate milk and a pop tart. And I’m talking for any meal, not just breakfast. It was quick, easy, convenient, and bonus, I could eat it on the go! Win win right? Wrong!
I felt like garbage all. the. time. I was cranky, impatient, tired, and just not being the mom or person I knew I could be. It was time for a change and to take some me time. Fast forward to now and my me time that I have learned to love is meal prep and gym time, because I know it results in a better version of me for my people.
This is the main reason, out of all the things, I choose to prep snacks/treats. Having the healthy option already made and waiting for me in the pantry or fridge has been a game changer. If it is there, I am going to grab that instead of going for the unhealthy option. I know that for my season, I don’t have time to pull out ingredients during the day and make myself a healthy lunch or snack. So taking the time to prep it has been huge for me.
:: PRE-MADE IS NOT AGAINST THE RULES
Last but not least, remember it is not all on you. You don’t have to spend hours prepping gourmet healthy options from scratch. Pre-made does not mean bad for you, if you do it the right way. Here is my favorite healthy time saving option!
–Fed Up: If you follow along over on Instagram, you know how much I love Fed Up. They are a healthy pre-made meal option for those of us who don’t have the time to do it all, but want to eat healthier. I have seen my mom use them for years and knew she loved the taste and convenience factor. You can choose to just do treats/snacks, or a specific number of meals a day, catered to your macros. It is an investment for sure, but to me it is worth it in time and convenience.
